| Otogi-zoshi is the genre of
storytelling from the late 16th to the early 18th century. They include
tales of court nobles, tales of priests, tales from the lives of common
people, legends of warriors, tales about non-humans, accounts of the
origins of holy places, &etc. Selected 46 pieces of Otogi-zoshi
contained in those volumes are a part of the collection which is possessed
by Kyoto University Library. 24 pieces of them are known as Nara-ehon
or "Nara picture books", which contains fabulous stories told in flowing
calligraphy alternating with descriptive paintings embellished with gold.
The other 22 pieces are unpublished manuscripts and early printed version.
They appear in photographic facsimile together with printed version for the fi rst time with full scholarly commentary(of each piece). This collection includes a number of those colored pictures of Nara-ehon. This also takes into account textual variants of some pieces. This extensive anthology offers invaluable materials to scholars and students of Japanese language and literature. see details (Japanese) |
